Changes to work on campus for Tier 4 (General) students

If you are an international student with a Tier 4 (general) study visa, there are very strict conditions affecting any work you undertake while studying in the UK. These conditions cover both paid work and unpaid work.  The consequences of breaching the conditions of your Tier 4 visa can be very severe and could have a long-term detrimental impact on your immigration status and your studies in the UK.

Newcastle University has an obligation as your Tier 4 sponsor to ensure that you do not risk breaching the conditions of your visa by working for more hours than permitted during your studies. We are therefore changing the way in which Tier 4 visa-holders can be employed on the campus, as described below, in order to safeguard you against accidental breaches of your visa conditions. These changes come into effect immediately.

From December 2017, Tier 4 (General) students can only work via one of three routes at any given time:

• Centrally recruited part-time roles with set hours;
• Jobs On Campus (JobsOC);
• Teaching and demonstrating roles (in one department only.)

If you hold a Tier 4 (General) visa and you are already working on campus, please note the following:

• If you currently work in more than one role, you will be required to choose a position to continue with from December 2017.  It is very important that you discuss your specific situation with your manager(s) as a matter of urgency to confirm exactly how to proceed.
• If your current work on campus has not been arranged via one of the three routes above, speak to your manager.
• The use of one-off payment forms is changing from 6th December and it will no longer be possible for you to be paid through this method.  If you have undertaken work that requires payment via this method, you MUST submit your payment form to the Payroll Office by 5th December 2017.

If you have further questions about the implications of the above changes for you, that your manager is unable to answer, please send your query to the following email address: studentemployment.tier4general@ncl.ac.uk
